Start off on the A819 to Inveraray. Stroll
around the town or visit Inveraray Castle, seat of the Chief
of the Clan Campbell – The Duke of Argyll. The original castle was rebuilt, together
with the town of Inveraray in the mid-eighteenth century. At the pier your will find The Arctic Penguin, a
sailing vessel which you can explore. Then in the middle of the town you will find the new
Jail, which was built in 1816 – you could even experience life behind bars here!
While in town there are also The Bell Tower and the Church
to see.
You can travel a few miles on the A83 Lochgilphead road to visit the Auchendrain
Museum of Farming Life. For anyone interested in the way life was in The Highlands
this is well worth a visit.
Head out of town on the A83 Arrochar/Glasgow road around
Loch Fyne where you will see yet another Scottish castle – Dunderave Castle, the
ancient Macnaughton stronghold. This castle was restored before the First World War and
the architect involved then was the famous Sir Robert Lorimer. It is privately owned now
and not open to the public.
At Cairndow there is Ardkinglas
Woodland Gardens with wonderful displays of conifers, azaleas and rhododendrons
throughout the summer.
Back on to the A83 over The Rest and Be Thankful road to
Arrochar. You can cruise on Scotland’s most romantic Loch Lomond from Tarbet or travel further down the A82 to visit Luss, home of STV’s "High Road".
Whatever you decide to do it is possible to make the return
journey alongside Loch Lomond via Inveruglas, Ardlui to Crianlarich then to Tyndrum and
back along the A85 to Dalmally/Lochawe area and home.
