Dalmally Historical Association

February 2008 Newsletter

Dear Member(s)

Jane Foulkes

You will probably already have heard of Jane’s death in December. She and Paul divided their time between London and their little house, Conach, in Stronmilchan. She had been a keen member of the Association, almost from its beginning, and her fluent Gaelic, her knowledge of the area and of the history of the Fletchers made her one of the mainstays of the Association. Her friendly presence and gentle good humour will be greatly missed.

Quern 5

The editorial committee has been meeting and we hope to produce the next edition of our journal, Quern 5, in the summer. If you might have an article to contribute, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Speakers

We hope to arrange evening talks by the following speakers later in the year:

Auchindrain – Joanne Howdle, A.M.A., Museum Manager and

                        Patsy Dyer,  Kailyard Project

Glenorchy Settlements – Ian Marshall, A.C.F.A. (Association of Certificated Field Archeologists) who carried out surveys of Bochyle,

Old Arichasthlich and Barr a’Chaistelalain about twenty years ago and is planning to look at them again. In the meantime he has used them for training field archeologists.

Outings and Visits

Auchtermally – We plan to visit the old settlement on the afternoon of Sunday 16th March. We shall have to walk from Brackley.

The Scottish Parliament – We are arranging a visit with the help of  Sir Jamie MacGrigor, M.S.P.  on  Thurs. 17th April. There is a maximum of fifteen for this visit so it will be on a “first come first served” basis. We shall need to share cars to get to Edinburgh.

Kilneuir Church and Kilmartin – A look round the ruins of the church then on to Kilmartin to the museum and/or prehistoric sites in the area on Saturday 10th May.

Clach nan Toll – the stone with the holes near Ardteatle. We hope to make an evening visit in May to look at the site and do some measuring. There is a short walk and a little gentle scrambling.

Dunoon Library – a possible visit to the library to look at how it is organised with a view to research in the local and historical books, hosted by Eleanor Harris. Date to be decided later.

If you want to take part in any or all of these visits, please could you indicate below and return the form in the enclosed envelope

Best wishes for the New Historical Year,

Dalmally Historical Association  Committee
