Visiting Ardbrecknish in august please arrange sunshine and good food .
Enjoy your visit. Fingers crossed for the weather though.
Hi there, I wonder if you can help? I have been visiting Loch Awe since around 5 year old (now 42), the last time being around 6 years age. I now reside in the Shetland Islands and wish to return to the area to do a spot of fishing and camping like the old days with an old friend for 2 days in mid August. Ideally we would enjoy some wild camping on the eredine / ardchonnel side of the loch as that is where most of our childhood memories lie and the spot where i got engaged. In addition, we would be enjoy have a small controlled campfire for which we could bring our own logs. We always abide by the country code of good conduct and were taught never to cut down or damage trees (although we did use some dead wood lying on the forest floor opposite from time to time) latterly we just tend to bring a couple of bags of logs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Best regards
Gavin
Sorry for the grammar…shocking!
Hi Gavin,
Casual camping is usually allowed in most places down the southern lochside, although it is always wise to gain permission from the individual landowner first. ( Some may be reluctant as unfortunately, unlike yourself, some recent campers have been very destructive and untidy, which has rather spoiled it for others). You may need to get a fishing licence, available from Lochawe Stores, Ardbrecknish Boats, Ardbrecknish Bar and various other places and it might be worth asking then about suitable places to camp in that area. Tight lines and good weather!
Hi Sandra, Thanks for the advice. I am pleased that camping should not be too difficult, i will seek further advice, a permit and perhaps even a small refreshment at the the Ardbrecknish Bar! I am saddened to hear of vandal camper ruining some areas. I may hire a boat out so do you have any tips on the most effective lure
Hi Gavin,
Glad to be of some help.
Donald Wilson at Arbrecknish boats will be able to hire you a boat and give you all the advice about lures etc.
Have fun.
Hi, your forum has commenced at exactly the right time for me. I will be visting Loch Awe and Loch Etive mid Sept (in the hope that the midges are well gone!) and intend kayaking the Loch’s. I am in a sea Kayak and my two boys (27 and 30 yrs) will be on sit on tops. We hope to wild camp a couple of nights from the kayaks so the above advice works for me too. We also intend to do a bit of walking so any options for a good one of about 10 miles would be welcome. Also any comments about kayaing the loch and possible dangers. None of us have done this bit of Scotland before and any advice and guidence would be great. (ie. what sort of water temp could we expect so we can dress for that in case of a capsize). We are really looking forward to the trip.
Best of luck with this site, Roger
My dream is to move to loch awe area one day, just need the money and to convince the missus.

I live in england now after some time in the army but i swear i will move there one day so help me god
Hi Roger
Good to hear you are visiting Loch Awe to do some kayaking. There are many walks to do around here – have a look in the ‘Things to Do’ section which gives a few ideas for walks. If you are feeling energetic you could climb Ben Cruachan (the start of the walk is close to the Cruachan Power Station). Alternatively you could walk to the ruined Sheilings in Glenstrae. The start of the walk is just off the Stronmilchan road near Duilleter Farm. The walk is signposted and I believe it is about 11 miles there and back. There is also Glen Orchy (the road which connects Dalmally with Bridge of Orchy) which is worth a visit. Keep going along the Glen Orchy road until you get to the Bailey Bridge and then walk over the bridge and up the hill. The water under the bridge is dramatic.
Have a great holiday.

I was doing some geneology work and stumbled on you website through a cousin who has been to a town nearby on some consulting work from the USA. I am having a great time learning about your area and hope to one day come there to see for myself..I am excited to learn that it is a great place to fish as that is my passion after my family..I really want to find out the origin of the name, Awe. We always thought it was German. Now the whole family is so excited to think it may be Scottish..I would love to correspond with someone that can tell me stories..take care. Luanne
The website looks really good and the photos are beautiful. We’re looking forward to coming to the Dalmally Games on Saturday and maybe meeting some old friends.
All the best to everyone involved in creating the website and keeping it running.
Hi Luanne Awe Heddy
For your info the name Loch Awe comes from the Gaelic Loch Obha which means loch of the water.
Best wishes

In the late 1990’s I visited Dalmally and stayed in the Craig Villa (I think it is called) Guest House. I wanted to visit the area of my ancestors, the McNicols. I found the headstone for Finlay and Ann McNicol, my great, great grandparents. My Great Grandfather, John came to Australia in 1834 with his wife Ann (Nee Leitch). Sadly I lost the photos in a flood here and wondered if you know of someone who has photos of the headstones of the McNicols. In fact I am interested in any pieces of information on them. I did remember seeing some church records but am unable to locate any information on them on the web.
I also visited Clifton and saw, what I believe to be the old cottages my Great Grandfather John lived in but could not even verify that.
Anything you could do to help would be appreciated and if cost is an issue, please let me know. The McNicols are buried in the old Dalmally Church yard (now the Glenorchy Parish Church).
Kindest regards
