North Argyll Volunteer Car Scheme (NAVCS) organises volunteers to give lifts to people who are unable to use public transport or to drive themselves, and who therefore have difficulty in accessing health care and social facilities.
The scheme has 48 drivers at the moment in the Seil/Luing/Kilmelford, Taynuilt/Kilchrenan/Dalavich and Dalmally/Bridge of Orchy areas with approximately 96 passengers who are taken to dentists, doctors, hospital, shopping, bank lawyers, lunch clubs, funerals or even just social visits. Many of the passengers cannot manage getting on to local buses or trains, and sometimes there is no bus or train service nearby.
Sometimes passengers can make their own way to the doctors by bus but then have a wait of 3 or 4 hours before they can get a bus back home. Often passengers could get on to a bus or train to Oban but could not manage back with their shopping. Several of the passengers would have to move in to Oban to sheltered accommodation, the car scheme helps them live a normal life and stay in their family home as long as possible.
This award would go towards the actual running of the car scheme, passengers are asked to make a donation of 30p per mile with a maximum donation of £7.50, our drivers are reimbursed at 35p per mile. As some of our journeys can be over 130 miles this can make quite a dent in the scheme’s finances.

THE BIG LUNCH 2011
May 16th, 2011 by adminJoin in The Big Lunch 2011
The Big Lunch is an Eden Project initiative that aims to get as many of the 61 million people in the UK as possible to have lunch with their neighbours once a year, and it’s happening on Sunday 5th June 2011.
It’s a fantastic community cohesion project that cuts across social, cultural, class and generational divides. As such, we’re trying to spread the word about the initiative as far and wide as possible and ensure that all types of community are encouraged to take part.
Would your area be able to hold a Big Lunch for a few hours of fun, friendship and community? It’s not to late to organise something – no matter how big or small. A Big Lunch can be anything from a few neighbours getting together in a garden or on the street, to a full blown party with food, music and decoration that quite literally stops the traffic.
You can also get an organisers pack, which contains invitations, posters, a window sticker, badges and stickers, by registering on our website www.thebiglunch.com
You can have a chat with me about the Big Lunch by calling 0141 242 1512 or 07703 189049. Alternatively you can send me an email at steve.williams@thebiglunch.com.
Thank you so much in advance for your support. I wish you a very happy Big Lunch day this June!

Volunteer of the Year Awards
April 5th, 2011 by adminOnce again this summer will see the celebration of volunteers and volunteering across Argyll and Bute marked by the prestigious Volunteer Of the Year event. This year it is themed, ‘Celebrating Voluntary Action’.
Immediately following Volunteers Week, the date this year is 17th June and, again, Kilmory Council Chambers will be the venue.
The exciting news this year is the announcement of a new and sponsored award – ‘Volunteer Involving Organisation of the Year’. This is open to all those voluntary organisations across Argyll and Bute who involve and often depend on volunteers to make a difference and there is a fabulous cash award of £1,000 to the winning organisation or group.
In addition, the Sargus Memorial Prize will be awarded to the Indivdual Volunteer of the Year and there will also be recognition of young Volunteers. Altogether, this is a great day and a great event for the voluntary sector.
Nomination forms are now available – either see the website at www.argyllcommunitites.org or contact your local Argyll Voluntary Action office. Alternately nomination forms will be available on the Argyll and Bute Council website.
This promises to be the best Awards day to date, and all attending will see the finalists for the Organisation of the Year showcase their work, with decisions to be made on the day.
Please let us know if you are attending, so catering can be made available. The day will start at 10.30am and finish by mid-afternoon. If you let us know early enough we may be able to help with travel costs. As in previous years the event will be hosted in partnership with Argyll and Bute Council and the Sports Volunteer Awards will be made on the day.
Remember – Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards, 17th June 2011, Council Chambers, Kilmory, Lochgilphead. Make sure you nominate the Volunteer or Organisation who you think deserves the accolade – all nominations must be received by 18th May.
Kind regards
